Taiko no Tatsujin rocks Japanese television in latest ad spot

Oh boy, we're pumped to try out some Taiko no Tatsujin (Taiko Drum Master) on our Wii. The only problem is, we're not sure if we're going to be able to, as Namco has made no intention to release the game outside of Japan ... so far. Sure, we could import, but the Japanese might be a bit too much for us. That's a discussion for another time, we suppose.

With some crossed fingers (do you know how hard it is to blog with crossed fingers?) and optimistic attitudes, we're wishing upon every star we see and hoping beyond hope that we will get a localization of the game. In the meanwhile, we'll just have to settle for awesome Japanese advertising, which you can catch past the break. Be sure to hit up our gallery for some new screens, as well.

Sony: PS3 price isn't an issue this Christmas

in PS3 Fanboy, Wed, 29 Oct 2008 00:00:00 GMT

Filed under:

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at the London Game 3.0 conference Ray Maguire, Managing Director of SCEUK, indicated that there were no plans to drop the price of the PS3 this year. "We have a business to run, and we have to make sure we're doing the right thing for the shareholders as well." He went on to say that "At the moment there's a marketplace for PS3 and I think for this particular Christmas, with the kind of quality of games we're seeing coming out this Christmas, I don't think the price of the console is going to be an issue at all."

It seems that sales in the UK are "absolutely on target," despite the disparity between the price of an entry-level PS3 and an entry level Xbox 360. This atitude seems slightly cavalier considering the current economic climate. People will be going for the most affordable option this Christmas. On the other hand, as Maguire states, they've a business to run and shareholders to placate. Will this years' exclusive titles such as LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2 and MotorStorm Pacific Rift be enough to push people towards the premium product?

Make your pets hate you, win a Wii and Animal Crossing

in Nintendo Wii Fanboy, Tue, 28 Oct 2008 23:17:00 GMT

If you have no interest in actually paying for a Wii and Animal Crossing: City Folk, Nintendo has your back. For the next three weeks, the company is encouraging people (North Americans only) to dress their pets in adorable outfits, and send photos of the unamused, uncomfortable animal(s) to this website. Come November 16th, the fifty best will win a Wii, a copy of Animal Crossing: City Folk, and a WiiSpeak microphone. Maybe this is the excuse you've needed to justify buying a pug?

The rules encourage an Animal Crossing theme, meaning the entries featured so far on the site are fairly rubbish, with most people just putting a hat on a disgruntled labrador. We sense our own idea is a winner. Protip, though: getting a necktie on a giraffe is hell.

Funde Razor Denver 2008 [Day Note]

Re: Eyeball Panic!

Remember last year's fund raiser for Child's Play: Funde Razor 2007? Well it looks like I may be hosting another one here in Denver this year. I've already lined up a possible location downtown and even a possible date: Dec. 10. Though I’m still not positive on the date and setting yet.

I’m going to be meeting with the owner of the club next Monday to try and work out the details, put down cash and sign paperwork. I’ve been amassing mounds of gaming schwag and other goodies to give away as door prizes at the event and will likely try to get Rock Band 2 set up for some on stage gameplay.

Couple of neat things about the new venue (if we get it):

The owner is only charging for the soundman, and even that is almost nothing.

The place has a bar/restaurant license, meaning it won’t be limited to 21 and older this time around. Instead they’ll just ID at the bar for those who want to drink.

The capacity is 300 or so, double the capacity of last year’s event.

I’ll make sure to keep you posted on the details. What would you think about maybe sending me an autographed copy of your book to give away?

in PS3 Fanboy, Tue, 28 Oct 2008 23:00:00 GMT

In addition to a stunning new trailer, a recent blog post on the PlayStation.blog revealed that PS3's exclusive Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm will feature post-release DLC, which will add additional support characters and missions to the game. While Namco Bandai is usually notorious for their overpriced DLC offerings, we're surprised to hear that it'll be all free. Seriously. "It will mostly focus on new support characters and missions and best of all, it will all be FREE!" If the beautiful graphics and exclusive PS3 support haven't convinced you, perhaps this announcement will.

Ultimate Ninja Storm is available next week.

MotorStorm 2 Getting Weekly DLC, Eventually [Motorstorm: Pacific Rift]

in Kotaku, Tue, 28 Oct 2008 22:40:00 GMT

Owners of Motorstorm: Pacific Rift will have good reason to fire up their copies of the PlayStation 3 racer well after launch date, as Evolution Studios says it's planning on releasing "something new to play with every week" much of it expected to be absolutely free. Since the title doesn't ship to Evolution's home turf until November, don't expect anything this Thursday, though.

The game's director, Nigel Kershaw, tells CVG that the team has new goodies expected to digitally ship via the PlayStation Store "in the coming months," that "major packs" will hit the new Motorstorm sometime after Christmas. So hurry up and wait.

Price rollback on Frontman guitars

in Nintendo Wii Fanboy, Tue, 28 Oct 2008 22:21:00 GMT

If, for some reason, you suddenly find yourself both in need of an extra Wii Guitar Hero controller and a little light on cash -- no idea what could put so many people in such a state at this particular time -- you may be interested in today's Amazon Deal of the Day.

For $25.98 (just enough to qualify for free shipping!), the retailer is offering the Nyko Frontman guitar controller in either white or yellow. Both include interchangeable pickguards for a bit of customization. Of course, this guitar was originally designed for Guitar Hero III, and consequently does not feature the freaky touch pad business that the newer World Tour guitars do. But as a second guitar (or a bass) it should be fine.

As part of the London Games Festival Fringe, there is an unofficial event by-fans-for-fans where you can show off your Guitar Hero skills to win copies of the new GH: WT game, tickets to the official launch event in November and other GH swag courtesy of Activision.

Rumor: Rock Band 2 in Europe this side of Xmas

in PS3 Fanboy, Tue, 28 Oct 2008 22:10:00 GMT

Filed under:

Nothing's confirmed, but it seems that one of EA's external PR partners may have let slip a possible release windows for Rock Band 2 in Europe. Originally they claimed, whilst talking to Eurogamer, that the game would be out "this side of Christmas." Eurogamer followed up with EA's internal PR team to check on the information and all they were told was the usual spiel: "MTV, Harmonix and EA have not formally confirmed a UK release date for Rock Band 2."

The same external PR partner sent out another email correcting their earlier "mistake." If it was indeed such a thing. If, on the other hand, this release window is accurate, we'll be very pleased. The almost year-long delay between US and European release for Rock Band 1 went beyond a joke and with Guitar Hero: World Tour releasing next week a lot of Europeans are looking for instant gratification with an, in our opinion, inferior product. If Rock Band 2 really releases this year then it's definitely worth waiting for, for the breadth of DLC alone.

Final Gears of War 2 Trailer Full of Gameplay, Explosions, Juice [Epic]

in Kotaku, Tue, 28 Oct 2008 22:00:00 GMT

This time around there's no emo soundtrack, no self reflection, no admiration of pretty flowers through sniper scopes, just pure, explosive gameplay in the launch trailer for Gears of War 2. The game looks phenomenal and after reading our hands on impressions, we can't wait to crotch-saw more Locust hordes. You'll be able to get your Lancer wielding hands on Gears come Nov. 7 for Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 "Dragon" Controller Goes Exclusively To Walmart [Microsoft]

in Kotaku, Tue, 28 Oct 2008 21:40:48 GMT

Red and green Xbox 360 controllers may be appropriate for the Christmas season, but once the Chinese New Year rolls around, you're going to look pretty clueless struggling with the D-pad on that red jobbie. Thanks to Walmart (and Sam's Clubs!) exclusive "dragon" controller, you can stay fashionably in control.

The controller bundle, which is packed with a wired headset fancier than the one we have at Kotaku Towers West, is available now for just shy of fifty bucks. Jump, if you're feeling froggy, just don't ask us to explain why it has an antique candlestick-style telephone screened on there.

Cooking Mama invading North American kitchens on Nov. 18

For those of you that read our write-up of the game back at E3, you know we thoroughly enjoyed our brief time with Mama in Cooking Mama: World Kitchen. Now, the game has been dated for North America, arriving on our shores November 18th. Cooking Mama: World Kitchen boasts over 50 recipes and co-op gameplay, and will not be as punishing as the original, as one failed step in the recipe doesn't destroy the whole meal.

So, who's excited to put on their apron and get to cooking with Mama?

Canuck Costumiers Clothe Croft [Fashion]

in Kotaku, Tue, 28 Oct 2008 21:20:00 GMT

Everyone's favorite Cheltenham-educated grave robber Lara Croft can't be short of a few quid – what with all the golden idols and treasures of the ancients she must have kicking around the attic of Croft Manor. Nevertheless, she seems to have a fairly limited wardrobe. Barring the rare occasions she slips into a ballgown to infiltrate an arms dealer's party or sprays on a swimsuit for shark-dodging shenanigans she seems perfectly happy to leap about the place in what must by now be a rather scruffy pair of hot pants and matching top.

In an attempt to broaden Lara's fashion options (and, yes, publicize Tomb Raider: Underworld) ten of Quebec’s top fashion designers are putting together new outfits for the polygonal posh bird as part of the 'Virtually Fashionable' event at the Festival Arcadia games show in Montréal.

The best two will be incorporated into the new game, where they will probably end up ruined.

Breaking Records: How Not to Get in the Guiness Book With a DS [Feature]

in Kotaku, Tue, 28 Oct 2008 21:00:00 GMT

It seemed so easy.

Almost exactly a year ago, 381 Australian kids crammed into a Sydney shopping mall and played Nintendo DS at the same time. This, ladies and gentlemen, is apparently all it takes to gain entry to the Guinness Book Of Records. You don't even have to play the same game, according to Guinness. Just people room DS for five measly minutes. What could be simpler?

DS London – a group of socially-minded DS gamers from (hey!) London - decided that there was no way this record could be allowed to stand. They would organize a UK attempt on the world record. DS was coming home.

“DS London started about two and a half years ago," Joe Lee said. "I bought a DS Lite (I thought the original DS looked a bit gimmicky) and was impressed. I got my friend to buy it and he loved it - then we thought 'us two playing is great, but we need more people'. I did a quick search and found that there was a meetup every month. At first, it was a bit of a nightmare - we were struggling to get 3 or 4 people. It really kicked off last year at the Games Festival where we had a meetup listed as part of the Fringe Festival and were able to fill up a whole pub."

But isn't it a bit odd, sitting in a pub with loads of people not talking to each other, save for a few pictochat missives? It's not like that, says Joe, “Actually, people who come to DS London generally like to socialise, have a quick drink and discuss what is going on in the world - then maybe play some games.”

The idea of breaking the world record came out of one such chin-wagging session. With the help of the London Games Festival Fringe and Metropolitan University DS London was able to secure a venue and get some funding to hire equipment and publicize the event. 500 people should do the trick. Easy.

DS London members have been out and about, talking up the event to their friends, posting it on their blogs and even stopping people in the street who spot carrying a DS. A group outing to a Video Games Live show at the Royal Festival Hall the day before soon turned into an impromptu recruitment session.

The London Games Festival has listed the event on their website and there was a strong response.

It's going to be fine, right?

—--

Apparently not.

There are about thirty people in DS London shirts dotted about the room and some are looking a little anxious. It is 4 o'clock and there are only about 100 or so people in the venue. That target of 500 is looking quite far off.

It is Saturday afternoon and I am in a room above the Rocket Complex on Holloway Road. The Rocket is a student venue – part of London Metropolitan University. In the bar downstairs, the GRL GMR tournament is winding up as one Mario Karter edges ahead of the competition to claim victory.

This is usually a concert venue. It is empty apart from the stage, a few scattered plastic chairs and a small table for registrations. I hand over my form, flash my DS Lite to prove I haven't smuggled in a PSP or something and receive an inky stamp on my hand.

People are sitting in groups on the floor or alone on chairs. Everyone is bent over their handheld. I spot fat, old school DSs covered in scratches and stickers mixed in with DS Lites in multiple colors and states of repair. I'm rockin' my wife's crimson/black Lite for the afternoon.

I chat briefly to Joe and Robbie from DS London. It'll be fine, insists Joe. The DS London crew were out looking for random DS players at the shops earlier and found some people who said they would turn up. Someone else was talking to a big crowd of Japanese students from nearby City University. There is a rumor that about 150 of them will be arriving any minute now – each one fully DS'd up. With more recruits expected from the group's foray to Video Games Live we might just scrape through.

The plan is to leave it as long as possible, then make the attempt as soon as the count is high enough. We have the venue until late, but sooner or later the casual crowd will begin to drift away.

Clock ticking, I take a wander around the hall. The variety of attendees is what is most striking I've been to LAN parties and games conventions and the demographics usually straddle a solid band of 18-25 year old blokes. This is different. There are gaggles of youngish girls, gawky teenage boys with their pink DS-carrying girlfriends, lone men and women in late middle age. Whole families have turned up and - sure enough - more are trickling in all the time.TITLEOFGALLERY

North Londoner Gina is coy about revealing her age, but is convinced she is the oldest person in the room. She read about the event on Pocket Gamer and thought "Why not?"

Her game of choice is Tetris played on the oldest-school grey DS I have ever seen. This thing must be from the first batch to hit the UK. She is sitting alone, but says, "I just enjoy being with all these people, playing. I hope they do more or these."

Russell is 42, here with his eight year old son, Arthur. He has always liked gaming, but since having Arthur he has found he is able to play more - it is a fun thing that they can enjoy together. "It can be difficult to find stuff to get out and do together," he says. Arthur nods his apprTITLEOFGALLERYoval, unwilling to lose concentration on the networked Mario kart session they have entered.

Andy is has come from New Cross after hearing about the event from a friend. He doesn't consider himself a gamer either. “That's more my brother, really,” he says, “I do play a bit though, and I've been joining in with a few anonymous games since I got here.”

“I really like the atmosphere,” he adds, “I thought it might be all up to date games but these guys are pretty retro, which is cool.”

As I take Andy's photo (Gina politely demurs) Joe and another DS Londoner try to fill some time with networked Tetris and Mario Kart competitions projected onto a big screen. Ten contestants sit at the front of the room, hunched over in their chairs while we watch their Tetris boards slowly fill up.

The Guinness guys are here, as well as someone from Traveller's Tales, who starts showing a demo of the Guinness World Records game on the Wii. I look around for a networked game to join but find only 42 All-time Classics within range. With a sigh I join a game of Dominoes, which turns out to be quite fun.

Mid-game, Joe gets up on stage and announces that the time is now. We need to take a headcount.

It doesn't look good. The busload of Japanese students are conspicuous by their absence and the room looks nowhere near full enough.

The Guinness adjudicator asks us to file past him with DS in hand. A volunteer clicks a counter. There is some shaking of heads and rueful expressions are exchanged.

We press on regardless. A timer is projected on the big screen and we all cue up our game of choice. I go for Tony Hawks Proving Ground – mainly because in free roaming mode I can take one hand away to take photos and still technically be playing it.

On the count of five the timer is off and we all bow our heads to pray to the Nintengods. Taking a few sneaky looks around in between grinds/photos I spot people playing Metroid Prime: Hunters, Mario Party, even fiddling with Korg DS-10.

5..4..3..2..1. That's it. We are done. Joe gets up to the mic again to announce that the final head count, as verified by Guinness, is... 133 people.

EPIC FAIL.

But, perhaps, heroic fail too. Everyone involved had a great time. Friends were made, contact details exchanged and above all games were played by the most diverse crowd I have ever seen at a gaming event. We even raise £130-odd quid for Children In Need.

Later, in the bar, I ask Joe if he would do this again.

“HELL YES!” he cries.

“We are definitely going to do it again,” he continues, sipping his drink, “we have finally received some recognition from a group of different people and we got about a third of the way there. There is nothing stopping us from going all the way next time.”

If you live in or near London and you want to drink beer, make friends and perhaps even play a little DS, DS London are having a follow up meeting to commiserate, plan a comeback and (mainly) have a laugh on Saturday 1st November - details here.
